Estate: Lynch Blosse
Associated Families
Description
A Galway family who lost most of their estates in that county under Cromwell but received extensive grants of land in the barony of Carra, county Mayo under the Restoration Settlement, most of which they managed to retain despite supporting the Jacobite cause. Their estate was mainly in the parishes of Ballintober and Ballyovey in the barony of Carra and in the parishes of Mayo, Kilcolman and Balla in the barony of Clanmorris. The lands in the barony of Clanmorris were previously part of the estate of the Moores of Brize, which Sir Henry Lynch claimed by his marriage in 1722 to Mary Moore. His claim was settled by a decree of the House of Lords in 1744. Through their connection with the Moores the Lynch Blosses also held a half share in substantial estates in the barony of Athlone, County Roscommon and the barony of Garrycastle, King's County (Offaly) which were advertised for sale in October 1852. In the early 18th century the Lynch Blosses had a house at Corrandulla in the parish of Annaghdown, barony of Clare, county Galway. By the mid 18th century they were living at Castlecarra although they retained the house at Corrandulla until the early 19th century. In 1876 the Lynch Blosse estate amounted to 17,555 acres. The Congested Districts' Board purchased the Lynch Blosse estate of 18,566 acres in 1909 for £154,000. The Irish Tourist Association File makes reference to the account of S. Nicholson's survey of the estate in 1844 being in the library of the Archbishop of Tuam. The house at Moat was the main residence of the Lynch Blosses in the 18th and the early 19th century. In 1786 Wilson refers to Moat, the seat of Sir Henry L. Blosse. A fire destroyed the original house in 1808. It was rebuilt and is marked on the first Ordnance Survey map as Attavally. The Lynch Blosse family were absentee landlords for most of the 19th century. In 1894 the house was recorded as the seat of Sir Henry Lynch-Blosse. Later the house became a community school run by the St Louis nuns. It is now known as Balla Secondary Schoool.

Castlecarra
(H70)
Granted to Sir Henry Lynch after the Restoration, it was the family's main home in county Mayo for much of the 18th century. In 1786 Wilson refers to Castle Carra as the seat of Mr. Lynch. The mansion house and offices at Castlecarra were described in 1844 by Samuel Nicholson as "now almost ruins". Castlecarra was leased to the Brownes of Castlecarra at this time and was part of their property for sale in 1852. The ruins of the original tower house are still extant but much of the surroundings are now covered by forestry.

Farmhill/Carradoyne
(H436)
In 1786, Wilson refers to Farmhill as the seat of Mr. Vesey. Dean Arbuthnot, who lived in the house in 1814, was rector of the parishes of Crossboyne and Kilcolman and a brother of Sir Robert Arbuthnot. The Gonne Bells were recorded as resident in Lewis and the Ordnance Survey Name Books. The house appears to have been known as Farmhill during the Vesey/Arbuthnot/Gonne Bell ownership and thereafter as Carradoyne House. It was occupied by Thomas Elwood in 1845 and by Lady Lynch Blosse at the time of Griffith’s Valuation. By the 1860s it was the home of the Sheffields. It was occupied by Katherine Tynan and her husband, Henry Albert Hinckson, during World War I. Carradoyne House is still extant and occupied.

(H4838)
Marked on the first edition Ordnance Survey map this house was occupied by William Nally at the time of Griffith's Valuation and held from the Lynch Blosses. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage notes its connections with P.W. Nally, a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood and a well-known late nineteenth century athlete influential in the founding of the Gaelic Athletic Association. The house is now a ruin.
