Description

Peter Carey, son and heir of Captain Peter Carey and his wife Sarah, was granted Ballymackpatricke and other lands in the barony of Condons, county Cork in 1667. Ballymacpatrick was later known as Careysville. At the time of Griffith's Valuation Edward Kiley Carey held land in the parishes of Clondulane, Kilgullane and Macroney, barony of Condons and Clangibbon, county Cork. His parents appear to be Peter Carey of Careysville and Elizabeth Kelly who married in 1793, see http://fosbery.tripod.com/CareyFamily.htm. In June 1859 lands belonging to Edward K. Carey amounting to 388 acres in the barony of Condons and Clangibbon were offered for sale. In the 1870s Edward Keily Carey's estate amounted to 1,670 acres. Careysville was inherited by the Montgomerys after the death of Edward K. Carey in the mid 1880s.

Careysville (H3349) Careysville Castle, originally known as Ballymacpatrick Castle, was the seat of the Carey family from the late 17th century. In 1750 Careysville was occupied by John Carey and Peter Carey was resident in 1814. In 1837 Lewis refers to “the handsome modern mansion built on the site of Careysville castle” by E.K. Carey. Valued at £50 in the mid 19th century the Careys held this property in fee. Inherited by the Montgomerys of Killee and sold by them to the Duke of Devonshire in the mid 20th century. In 1942 the Irish Tourist Association Survey noted that the house was then unoccupied as Captain Montgomery had moved into a modern bungalow nearby. Careysville is now in use as a fishing lodge offering luxury accommodation. Churchfield House (H4642) Dr Langer Carey was a member of the Careyville family. He lived at Churchfield House, Newport in the mid 19th century, valued at £17.10 shillings and held from Lady Waller.
