Description
This family were Elizabethan settlers in the Shanagolden area of county Limerick. Two brothers were given grants of lands in the barony of Orrery and Kilmore, county Cork in the 1660s. Richard Gibbings held an estate in the parish of Kilbolane, barony of Orrery and Kilmore, at the time of Griffith's Valuation and Bartholomew and Jonathon Gibbings held land in the parishes of Kilbrin and Tullylease, barony of Duhallow. The estate of Bartholomew Gibbings and others at Marybrook, barony of Duhallow was advertised for sale in May 1860 and the life interest of Richard Gibbings in the 1,147 estate of Gibbings Grove was for sale in July 1862. The estate of Robert Edward Gibbings at Ballydeague and Kilnahoura, over 1,200 acres in the barony of Fermoy, was advertised for sale in April 1862. The Irish Times reported in May 1862 that some of these lots had been sold to Messers. Howe, Dillon and Bruce. A further 1,100+ acres at Gortroche, barony of Fermoy, was offered for sale in June 1871. Some of this property was sold to W. Litterdale while the sale of the remainder was adjourned. In the 1870s the Reverend Richard Gibbings of Gibbing’s Grove owned 1,340 acres in county Cork, while his uncle Robert Edward Gibbings of America (Burke's 1904 records him having settled in Argentina) and formerly of Curraglass House, Charleville, owned 764 acres. Curryglass House and 488 acres, the estate of Robert E. Gibbings, were advertised for sale in January 1874. Reverend Gibbings was resident in Wales by the early 20th century. His cousins, Reverend Richard Gibbings, Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Trinity College, Dublin, held an estate in county Mayo and Jonathon Gibbings of Cork held land in counties Cork and Limerick in the 1870s.

Marybrook

This was originally a tower house with additions from the mid 18th century. Occupied by Edward H. Reardon in the first half of the 19th century and by John O'Connell in the mid 19th century, when it was valued at £11 and held from Bartholomew Gibbings. In the sale rental of May 1860 this house was describes as in "thorough repair" and leased to John Connell for 100 years from 1851. In the 1940s the Irish Tourist Association Survey reported that it was then the residence of the Cronin family. It is still extant and in use.

Gibbings Grove

This house was the seat of the Gibbings family in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The family was still resident in 1837 but by the early 1850s the house was occupied by Edmond Irwin who held it form Richard Gibbons. It was valued at £14. Later occupants were local priests and it was eventually sold by the Gibbings in the late 19th century. In 1944 the Irish Tourist Association Survey referred to it as the home of the Cagney family who had purchased the property c.1912 and also that it was famous for growing the Toormore apple, used in making cider. The house is still occupied.

Woodville
(H3270)
Woodville was occupied by the Reverend William Berkley in 1814 and in 1837 by Mrs Gibbons. Anne Gibbings was resident in the 1850s [widow of Bartholomew Gibbings of Gibbings Grove]. She held the property from Martha Jaunsey and the buildings were valued at £17.15 shillings. Her fourth son Robert Gibbings is described as "of Woodville" in Burke's Landed Gentry. A note on the sale rental of 1862 records the purchase of Lot 1 Woodville by Mr Starkey [Dr William Starkey]. The house remained in the possession of the Starkey family until the early 20th century.

Glenburn

Glenburn was occupied by A. Lewis in 1837 and was held in fee by John T.C. Gibbings at the time of Griffith's Valuation. The buildings were valued at £20.15 shilllings.

Curryglass

Originally a Goold home, occupied by B. Plummer in 1814 and Pierce Purcell Goold in 1837. His representatives held the property in fee at the time of Griffith's Valuation and the house was valued at £18. It was advertised for sale in May 1852. Home of Robert Edward Gibbings for sometime in the mid 19th century. An O'Callaghan home in the 20th century. Also known as Curraghglass or Curraglass House. In 1943 the Irish Tourist Association Survey noted its association with all of these families as well as, in the eighteenth century, the Lysaght family. It is still extant and occupied.
