Description
A Dorset family who settled in county Cork in the mid 17th century. ''Burke's Irish Family Records'' refers to William Hodder who obtained a grant of 7,365 acres in that county including Ringabrow or Hoddersfield. William's brother John received a grant of 3,729 acres in 1666 and left his estate to his nephew. From William's second son Francis descend the Hodders of Hoddersfield. Francis Hodder's great grandson William Hodder died in 1787 and left his estates to his nephew William Henry Moore who took the additional name of Hodder. Griffith's Valuation records W.H.M. Hodder holding land in the parishes of Kilkeedy, barony of Pubblebrien, county Limerick and Nohaval, barony of Kinalea, county Cork. Samuel Hodder was among the principal lessors in the parishes of Ballyfoyle and Tracton at the same time. In the 1870s William H.M. Hodder of Hoddersfield owned 1,885 acres in county Cork and 414 acres in county Limerick. The second son of William H. Moore Hodder was the Reverend Henry Theophilus, rector of Carrigrohane, county Cork, who married Sarah Forster in 1849. In the 1870s Mrs Sarah Moore Hodder of Parkmore, Ballincollig, county Cork, is recorded as owner of 763 acres in county Clare. At the same time Francis Hodder of Fountainstown owned 787 acres, Captain Samuel Hodder of Rinuabella owned 1,090 acres and Colonel W.H.M. Hodder of Hoddersfield owned 1,885 acres in county Cork.

Francis Sealy was leasing this property from F. Westcott at the time of Griffith's Valuation when it was valued at £19 though Lewis refers to "Woodview" as the seat of F. Sealy in 1837 and occupied by Oliver Ellard in 1814. Local sources indicate that this house was built by the Hodder family. See www.bandon-genealogy.com. More recently the Inishannon House Hotel.

Fountainstown

Francis Hodder was leasing this property to George Hodder at the time of Griffith's Valuation, when it was valued at £24. In 1837 Lewis referred to Fountainstown as the seat of G. Hodder. Local sources indicate that this house originally belonged to the Roche family whose lands the Hodders were granted and that the oldest part of Fountainstown House was the original Roche property. In the 1940s the Irish Tourist Association Survey noted that it was listed in the Association's directory of hotels. Fountainstown is still extant and occupied.

Samuel Hodder held this property in fee at the time of Griffith's Valuation, when it was valued at £25. Lewis refers to it as the seat of S.A. Austin in 1837. In 1942 the Irish Tourist Association Survey noted that had been a residence of the Austins but was then owned by the McCarthy family. Ringabella is still extant and occupied.

Ballea Castle

Francis Hodder held this property in fee at the time of Griffith's Valuation, when it was valued at £24 10s. Lewis also refers to it as his seat in 1837. Local sources suggest that It was originally built by the McCarthy family and later acquired by the Hodders. In the 1940s the Irish Tourist Association survey refers to it as being occupied by F. Dorman, retired engineer, and that it was the oldest occupied castle in Éire. Though much altered over the years, it is still extant and occupied.

Hoddersfield

Lewis refers to Hoddersfield as the seat of Col. Hodder in 1837 and held in fee by William H. Hodder in 1850. The house was then valued at £95. In 1894 Slater referred to it as the seat of William Hodder. In the 1940s the Irish Tourist Association noted that it was the residence of B Nicholson, who had bought the property from the Hodders and that the Library and other Hodder materials remained intact at the house. Hoddersfield is now a roofless ruin.

Shanballymore

The seat of a branch of the Roberts family, Hodder Roberts was resident in 1814 and Watkins Roberts in 1837. The residence of John Roberts in the early 1850s, held from William W.M. Hodder and valued at £23. The property remained in Roberts possession until 1884 when it was sold to the O'Keeffe family who still reside there.

Bushy Park

Hajba writes that Gifford Campion, born at Leitrim, acquired the lands of Bushy Park in the mid 18th century and that his son Richard Gifford Campion possibly built the house in the late 18th century. Bushy Park, Rathcormack, was occupied by John Walsh in 1814 and by Richard G. Campion in the early 1850s. The buildings were valued at £18.15 shillings and held from Major Heliger Lloyd. Occupied by William Moore Hodder in 1906. This house is still a residence.

Rockview (Inch)

In 1837 Lewis refers to the "very pretty residence of Mr Fitzgerald" proprietor of the extensive limestone quarries at Carrigacrump. The house was named Rockview on the first Ordnance Survey map. Teresa Fitzgerald was the occupier in the early 1850s holding the property from Colonel William H.M. Hodder, the buildings were valued at £15. Teresa Fitzgerald (nee Coppinger of Rosmore) married James Fitzgerald and they had a son Maurice and daughters Teresa, Mary etc see ''The Barrys of County Cork''. Margaret Fitzgerald of Carrigacrump owned 83 acres in the 1870s. Her estate at Rockview was advertised for sale a number of time in the mid 1870s. There is still an extant house at the site.
